The best juicer in it’s class for under a grand, August 8, 2013
    T. Miller (southern CA) –

We’ve run the gamut of top of the line juicers. First the Breville 1000w 800JXL which wasted 90% of the green leafy produce that we wanted to juice. Then the Omega 330VRT which clogged constantly no matter how small we cut the produce or how we alternated the different types of produce during a juicing session. It also produced a lot of foaming and the juice was a little gritty.

Finally, we purchased the Green Star GSE-5000. We’ve been using it weekly for over a year and are extremely happy with it. Takes about 30min for us to juice what turns into about 12 cups of green juice. That includes washing the produce and cleaning the machine afterward.

The GSE-5000 produces a great volume of juice per amount of produce, and the juice is clean and smooth like water.

Our trick to cleaning this machine is to run a whole lime and a whole lemon through it at the end of the juicing session. This gives the juice a nice lemonade-type taste, AND keeps the internals from getting all stained green or orange, or brown. We clean the machine immediately, and never allow it to sit dirty. The trick to cleaning the juicing screen is to run cold water over it, and scrub it out with the supplied brush, from the inside. This breaks off all the little pulp fibers that are stuck in the holes of the screen. Then scrub the outside. The pulp just comes right off quickly via this method in about a minute.

Would I love to own a Super Angel? You bet, but I’m not willing to spend $1,200 just to get 3% more volume.

Here’s the ingredients for a typical green juice session:
2 bundles (how it comes bundle in a grocery store) of Kale, usually the dark blue green “dino” kale, and the “russian red.”
1 bundle of chard, usually “Rainbow”
    1 bundle of cilantro
1 bundle of parcely, but only once a week
    2-3 celery stalks
    2-3 carrots
    1 cucumber
    1 orange/red/yellow bell pepper
    1 green apple
    1 whole lime
    1 whole lemon

THE Best Juicer on the Market – BAR NONE!!!, June 17, 2013
    M. B. Osborne

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

We purchased the GSE 5000 juicer June 4, 2013. I spent MANY hours watching videos (DO check out YouTube, you will learn HOW to Use and Clean all the juicers quickly and easily!!!), and comparing ALL the juicer models out there.

The Green Star juicers are the brand you want when you are SERIOUS about the QUALITY of your juice. Period.
“Fast” juicers basically obliterate the cellular structure of the fruits and vegetables. While this will give you juice quickly, it also destroys micronutrients through the brute force of the extraction, as well as the additional oxidation of the juice by the air introduced through the high speed blades.

“Masticating” juicers, particularly the currently popular “Vert” models, ARE better, but are still more gimmick than function. The reviews for these praise the better extraction, but MANY problems appear to occur due to the cheap construction of the devices, particularly the screen, which seems subject to breakage. These models have a LOT of plastic parts that are INTEGRAL to the machine, rather than just covers…

Now, the Green Star Elite GSE 5000 does have plastic, but the mechanical plastics are STURDY, DURABLE, and RIGID. The only thinner plastic part would be the unit housing cover. This, with reasonable care, should not crack, break, or otherwise fall apart easily. Since it IS an expensive piece of equipment, DO treat the parts with care, regardless how well constructed they are…

If you find this juicer “difficult” to clean or assemble, you simply should not be using any appliance more complicated than a spoon. Seriously. “DIFFICULT” IT IS NOT!!!

There are only SEVEN (7) parts to take off or put on. VERY EASY. Almost Idiot Proof.
The ONLY difficult parts to assembling it are:
    1) making sure the augers are correctly aligned, with the “one dot” gear tooth between the “two dot” gear teeth of the other auger, and
    2) Slightly rotating the twin augers when pushing them into the juicer body. They have to turn ever so slightly to align, but again, it is NOT difficult. Just gently “wiggle” them as you continue to gently push, and they will go in.

Do yourself and your juicer a favor, and cut your carrots into chunks no longer than about an inch. They will NEVER jam if you do. This goes for almost any vegetable. While the Green Star IS powerful, you purchased it to JUICE, NOT to cut the vegetables up and juice.
Also, if you take the extra time to cut the veggies before juicing, you will find that you will have to use FAR less pressure to push them into the juicer. (FWIW, I ALWAYS use the plastic, NOT the wooden pusher – It is DESIGNED not to reach all the way down to the gears, so you will NOT grind any plastic off – ignore that warning in the videos!!!)

Get a small bowl, and when the bowl is full, you have enough for a glass of juice.
If you are new to juicing:
    1) Add ice cubes to your juice. The colder the better when you start, TRUST.
    2) Add a bit of water to dilute it if the taste is too strong – It can take a bit of getting used to.
    3) Keep a can of frozen Juice Concentrate in the freezer, and add a small spoon to juices that are too “green” to help make them a bit more palatable.

Carrots are your juicer’s best friend. Put a piece or two after every soft veggie to help push the pulp through.

Every complaint about the Green Star screens is due to people NOT cleaning them promptly (within 30-60 minutes).
If you rinse and wipe your juicer FAITHFULLY and QUICKLY, you will never have a screen problem.
The Green Star 5000 comes with two brushes, and I have also found that a new toothbrush can do the job of them both pretty well.
The screen, which is the hardest part of the juicer to clean, collects fiber on the end where the pulp comes out. This is one reason cutting your produce into small chunks is strongly suggested.
Start by brushing the inside of the screen to loosen fibers. Then brush the outside of the screen to remove the loosened plant fiber. It shouldn’t take more than a minute or two, tops.

For ANYONE who complains about the amount of time to use or clean this juicer, stop and consider the time and energy you would use to prepare and clean up after a regular meal. This juicer extracts MORE juice than any other model except the weird, cumbersome, and expensive Norwalk. And that puppy makes prepping your fruits and veggies into a religious ceremony…
And clean up for the Green Star is no more difficult than washing your blender or food processor. Easier in some ways, no sharp blades to look out for.

This juicer is an investment, and will change your life in regards to how you look at juicing. Grasses, leaves, even weeds are now part of our diet (Lamb’s Quarters are so common, yet SO nutritious – my husband shakes his head, but knows to leave…

Terrific Juice. Super Dry Pulp. Requires time investment to clean thoroughly after each use. Helpful Customer Service, January 19, 2018

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
Read about pros and cons of 4 main juicer types in Chris Carr book and decided on a Twin Gear type because it was the second best at preserving nutrients; I was okay with the trade-off of being more time-consuming to clean than other types. The most-nutritious Norwalk costs thousands, while twin gear machines cost hundreds. Of the latter, I chose the Greenstar Elite based on reading customer reviews.
I appear to have received a defective machine. Amazon is shipping a replacement. I will update my review after it arrives and I’ve used it for a while.
On opening the box, it appeared to have been opened, unpacked and repacked, but nothing was missing, and the parts all looked clean and unused, so no problem, I thought. I read all and followed all instructions (I’m the type that always does that, and errs on the side of treating just about everything from clothing to machines with more TLC than specified). I also watched the DVD.
I used the juicer for one recipe from the Carr book on the 1st day (ie, I didn’t make multiple batches). Cut up carrots, kale, chard and spinach, I did add one small beet cut into 4 pcs. THRILLED with the results. Juice was delicious. The pulp was super-dry. The machine worked beautifully, no issues. Clean up was not quick. I already expected that and am willing to do it for the benefits. Don’t want any speck of organic matter left behind in the screen rotting over time. A helpful multi-tip, multi-brush tool comes with machine which makes it easier to get every speck. Cool so far.
I’m a decades long family caregiver, now down to one family member to care for at home. Nutrition has become a challenge. I’ve had a hunch for a while that the minimal eating has more to do with how tiring it is for her to chew, than lack of appetite. I try very hard to serve her things she likes, and she indicates that what I’d been serving her was delicious, but even with me feeding her to conserve energy, she waves most solid foods away after a few bites. I was aware that she’d keep emptying her glass if I kept refilling it, so for some time, I’ve been relying on 3-4 nutritional supplement drinks per day to ensure she’s getting a minimum of calories and nutrients. But I’m not thrilled, reading the ingredients.
She GUZZLED the 1st glass of juice, draining it to the bottom with sucking noises. More fresh vegetables consumed in 5 minutes than I’d normally get down her in a week. VICTORY! YAY!
Repeat day 2. I’m elated! I’m excited to anticipate perhaps all kinds of health benefits showing up for her in months to come if this continues!
Day 3: I decide I’m going to jazz it up a little and prep some watercress, parsley, and a crisp apple to add to the 3 ingredients I’d used for the first 2 uses. It took quite a bit of time to scrub and cut up, to wash and strip herbs and greens to remove all stems. Looking forward to having her juice minutes away, MACHINE DEAD. Tried other appliances in same outlet, work fine. Tried disassembling and reassembling several times. Tried Reverse button. DEAD. The machine gave no indications that it was failing or in distress the first 2 uses. Worked perfectly. I expect a machine that costs hundred of dollars to be capable of being used once a day FOR YEARS, not twice.
As I said, I will update review after receiving replacement and using it a while. The first machine is going back.
PS Had to wait til noon Eastern time to contact Tribest Customer Service Pacific time. VERY HELPFUL. GOT MY MACHINE WORKING quickly with over the phone instructions. Back to being thrilled! I cancelled the return and replacement process. Fingers crossed that there will be no more issues. Provided machine is reliable and long-lived, I expect to use this more than our Vitamix. Love it!
