I have a PRW 3500 which I am very happy with. I have become a Casio fanboy and keep a close eye on a couple of dozen watches, as the prices are fairly volatile. Eventually my “keepa” Chrome plugin told me that this PRG 280 was on sale at a very good price, and it was sold and fulfilled by Amazon, which I consider a significant advantage.

Stepping down from the 3500, you lose the solar power, the atomic radio receiver, and the barometer (listed in the order I consider important).

Solar power is very important. It does not give you “forever” power, but it does give you a 7-10 year span when you can beat on the ancillaries without concern. The booklet for the 280 suggests 2 year life, if you restrict the illuminator to 1 use per day, thermometer once per day etc. The illuminator restriction essentially rules out the auto-light that turns on with wrist position. And this is a shame because the backlight looks very good even though you can’t read the LCDs.

The atomic is fairly important, but most Casio’s will handily beat the published 15 secs/month. Mine runs about half that.

The reverse LCDs are difficult to read. The strange horizontal bar is next to useless, although the instruction book gives it various functions such as compass bearing history.

So far, a list of negatives, and you may think I don’t like the watch. Actually I love it. I’ve found I prefer analog watches. As a timepiece, I find them much easier to read to get an approximate time of day. The main hands are very clear and easy to read. The way the analog indicators function as pseudo-digital is fun to see. In compass mode, the second hand points north. There is a button combo that switches the main hands to your alternate time-zone, which is a neat party trick. The sub-dial indicating display function is very clear.

So you end up trading important but mostly invisible features (solar, atomic) for a very readable, useful and fun watch. With them both in front of me, I would take the PRG 280 over the PRW 3500. What’s more, if you wait for the right deal, you can get this 280 for better than 40% off list, and given that this price shows up fairly frequently I would not pay more than this.

Casio prg 280-1cr Protrek. I received this in the mail today from Amazon. First Let me start the review by telling you I’m a big Casio gshock and protrek Collector. I wanted this watch for about a year. I was waiting for the price to go down. Wednesday l was looking on Amazon checking out Protrek watches and saw this watch for $100.00 . I couldn’t believe my eyes . Now l sure didn’t need another watch. I have 36 Gshock watches and 5 Protrek watches. I had the first gshock to hit the market in 1983. I have the 2 Rangeman gshock watches. I have the King GXW56-1BJF gshock. 5 Mudman gshocks 2 Gulfman gshocks. The Gsteel smoke dial gshock. The Gwf 1000-1 Frogman Gshock made in Japan. The gwm5610-1 gshock and way to many more to mention. I have enough to open a small store. Just kidding. Now back to Protrek watches. I have the Casio prg 270-1 cr Protrek. The Prw 3500-1cr the prw 3000-1 and the pag 240t -7 titanium band. And the pag 240-1cr Pathfinder. Now first thing that comes to your mind. You probably thinking why do I have so many watches. Most people today don’t even wear watches because they use cell phones. I have been wearing gshocks for almost 34 years. I have had a watch on my Arm since then. I think of watches as a tool. Especially Protrek watches. They are great for hiking swimming, mountain climbing. They also are great for the outdoors . And of course gshock watches are the best watch for Rough and tough work. You can’t find a more durable watch than Gshocks that has been proven over and over again .just ask someone in the military. Also Protrekwatches are very durable to. This watch is a great watch for any occasion. For the money you won’t find a better made watch. The only thing is it uses batteries. They should last 2 years or more. Depending on how much you use the light. I have been wearing this watch all day and no discomfort. I was wearing it at the Gym. I had a woman come up to me and said she liked the way the watch looked. She wanted to buy her husband a watch for Father’s day. I pulled it up on my phone and showed her how much it was and she couldn’t believe her eyes. She was a Amazon Prime to. She ordered it and she will have it at her house Monday. She was very happy she saw me at the Gym. She said her husband loves Casio Protrek watches. I’m glad I made her day. I Love all gshocks and Protrek Collector. Big or small. I have a 7 inch wrist size. I think it looks great. Good luck on any watch you buy. Remember that the best watch is the one that fits compfortable on your Wrist. Remember to buy from Amazon and save money. I’m a Prime Member and it’s worth every penny. You can’t beat Amazon for the price.
