Good, mostly, but some shortcomings, November 8, 2016

This review is in three parts; the first details the Beach Camera company’s service, the second speaks to the quality of its bundle, and the third talks of my experience with the camera per se. I am awarding Beach’s service 5 stars, the bundle 3 stars, and the camera itself 5 stars, for an average of 4 stars.

Beach: Shipping was fast, even faster than promised. But in my particular case, the telephoto lens was missing. I emailed and called them and they Fedexed it (2nd day) right away. I dealt with Charlie, who was very helpful. The package arrived on time and contained what it was supposed to.

Now the bundle: The box that contains the package that Canon have put together includes the Rebel T6i body, the 18-55 mm lens, the neck strap, one battery, charger, instruction manual, and the body cap and two lens caps. The lens package Beach have put together is much better than some others. The long lens (caps included) picks up where the short one leaves off at 55 mm with no gap. Moreover, both lenses have image stabilization and both are the S-version, which makes best use of the smaller sensor format of the Rebel series. Contrast this with some of the other bundles, which, while they have the same short lens, use the 70-300mm long lens which, though it is longer, is not stabilized.

The genuine Canon case is very well made and well designed. It holds the camera snugly in the right compartment with either the lens pointed straight up, although the long lens can’t have a hood on it. The left compartment holds either lens with or without a hood, along with a spare battery and momentarily unused lens caps. The front compartment holds the filter wallet, brush, remote control, and card wallet if desired.

The SD card is high quality (Sony, class 10) and works well.

There are a lot of birds around our house, and prior to the arrival of the 55-250 lens, I tried to use the Vivitar tele converter with the 18-55 mm lens to shoot them. I’m no lens expert, but the pictures through the tele converter didn’t seem as sharp as those without. There seemed to be some sort of flare and chromatic aberration around the edges of dark objects against a light background. This was true for the wide angle converter as well. The only lens that doesn’t seem to have some problem is the little macro portion of the wide angle converter. Even worse, when I put the 2.2 converter on the long lens (55-250mm) when it finally did arrive, there was a lot of fog at the maximum 250 length. I really don’t think either of these converters is worth having. I can get a clearer picture by enlarging/cropping the pictures I make at 250 mm than by putting on the converter. So a point against Beach is that they included these two items in the package at all. They should have substituted something else for them or left them out altogether. They have negative value by wasting the customer’s time figuring out that they’re junk.

Another item that seems so low in quality not to be worth including is the remote control (Xit brand). It just doesn’t work. I used it to shoot from a tripod standing right next to it just to avoid jostling it. The controller was brand new, with a fresh battery, and I had to hold it a foot from the IR sensor and press it several times to get it to work. I doubt it would work from 6 feet away or more.

The flash is a cheap Xit brand model. I haven’t had occasion to use it, but I tested it and it seemed to work ok. It doesn’t have bounce flash capability, but it has slave and hot-shoe functions.

{Later, 12/8/16} I have now had a chance to use the Xit flash and have to conclude that it is more or less worthless with this camera. After repeated experiments on a number of different modes and settings, I cannot get it to slave adequately. Yes, it fires, but the sync is off and it never fires during the exposure. On the “regular” setting, it fires on some settings and modes, but sometimes prevents the shutter from releasing at all. When it does fire, it either washes out the picture or there is a black bar at the top or bottom of the frame, from bad synchronization. I wanted only to use it as a supplement, pointed at the ceiling, to make the flash pictures less harsh, but it doesn’t appear that it will work for that. The built in flash on the camera is intelligently controlled, the Xit is not, so it is not unreasonable that this happens. It may be that Canon planned it this way to prevent saving money by not buying their expensive accessory flash. So it may not be Xit’s fault that this happens. But Beach should have known and should have deleted the flash and lowered the package price commensurately.

The filter set seems ok; I shot with the uv filter for a while and didn’t seem to run into a problem. But the filters are all cheap (Digital Concepts brand) and uncoated, and I didn’t want to take a chance on either less-than-best images or a…

The camera is a great model, and takes wonderful pictures, July 11, 2017

All of the items displayed came in the package, and in original packaging. As other users have stated, some items are not top-notch quality, but it is worth getting all of these items for the same cost as the camera and zoom lens would be at any store. The camera is a great model, and takes wonderful pictures. I chose and recommend the T6i over the T6 due to some of the nicer usability features – touch LCD screen that can rotate, video setting fast and easy to get to, better megapixel quality, etc. Great camera!
