Used for improved strength for handwriting, March 23, 2017

This putty is very good and it’s fun to play with. We purchased the red theraputty to build strength for handwriting. It gives you a workout and you can have fun messing with it. I would recommend that you get the 6 ounce size of putty because it is the minimum amount I feel you could use and have it be effective. I have smaller hands and use the entire “ball” so I feel it is worth the extra money. We have used it for several months and it is still in good condition.

    pros
    Good
    Fun
    Does not dry out

    Cons
    Gets dirty

Yes it gets dirty because some dirt gets mixed in with the putty over time. You should also be aware that it will get on your clothes if you are not careful and it might stain. However The putty is good and I would recommend it to people that want to build muscle strength for handwriting.

My eight year old has dysgraphia, and I ordered this set on the advice of his occupational therapist. It’s identical to the putty he uses in therapy (he uses the orange/red at OT). We keep one of these containers in the car so that he can work with it and warm up his hands on the way to school, and we keep the other inside the house. I have started using it occasionally myself; I was diagnosed with arthritis when I was 36, and my hands can get pretty stiff sometimes. Working with the putty for a little bit helps alleviate that. Very happy with this purchase.

You can use this for all hand muscles from what I can see and for smaller muscles, like the ones between the fingers, use the softer putty, and gradually build up. Then massage your hand and watch the movement of each finger as you test how each one feels during movements. Then hold the part that hurts, and move them again to see if you may be able to retrain your finger to move in better alignment. Then advance to a stronger putty as you get stronger. Care like this (within reason, people! go get srays if you need them, for goodness sake!) can make a HUGE difference in you hand function! These have contributed to my own hands actually looking better and definitely functioning better. I had no problems except felt like my hands were getting weak and a slight trigger thumb feeling and a little pain with opening jars lately. Also I had trouble pressing down the strings on my cello and guitar as effectively as I used to be able to do. I also bought some forearm and wrist exercisers.
