… an IT professional I really need to have a good computer so I decided to update mine now, January 26, 2018

As a gamer and an IT professional I really need to have a good computer so I decided to update mine now.

3 years ago I bought a HP Envy 15 (core i7 4th gen, 16gb ram ddr3, GeForce 740m, touch, beats audio) and it served me well, except for the fact that the cooling fan broke at the 2nd year, and I had to replace it. Also the graphics card wasn’t able to give me a good performance in some games such as Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 or Killer Instinct.

After doing some really intense research I read many reviews and watched several benchmarks of laptops such as dell Inspiron 7577 (GeForce GTX 1060 6GB), dell 5000 series (GTX 1050 4GB), hp omen and so on. However many of these laptops weren’t the best choice for me, some because of the bad reviews (poor build, case falling apart), the design (don’t wanna go too crazy) or the price. In fact I didn’t want to spend 1500-2000$ on a laptop to have 16gb RAM, a good Graphics Processor and an i7. Since I also have a video game console to play, I wanted a solid good computer where I can do my work and play my games without having to struggle too much on performance settings.

After getting this and doing some tests I can say this laptop is just amazing. It has a solid build and a beautiful design.
The keyboard is solid, the screen is really sharp (I had to set up color calibration because it was a little bit too green) and much better than the previous laptop. I can even see the details of the tiny characters in League of Legends now. The sound is amazing (not as much as Bose speakers but still very good). The touch pad is very nice and smooth. Since it has a SSD it turns on in 10 seconds.

I didn’t test many games yet but Killer Instinct, Fortnite, League of Legends and Naruto 4 run at 60fps steady (Max Settings).
Even in scenarios with many particles and effects.

In short it is the best thing you will get in this price range.

PS: Unfortunately for the first time I had a bad experience with Amazon itself.
My product was packed in a box 4 times bigger than the laptop box and left in a random market instead of an UPS facility.
Also The metal stripe below the card reader slot arrived bent in the opposite direction of the laptop. Not a big deal, but still not happy about it.

Comfortable keys and usable track pad, May 2, 2018

    MODEL: i7 7700HQ, 16GB RAM, Nvidia 1050Ti
    NOTE:
*I live and work in the tropics where temperature can reach 40 degrees Celsius and my workplace/home doesn’t have air conditioning, only electric fans. Average temp. of my environment is within 28-35 degrees Celsius.
*I have had this laptop for 5 months now.

    REVIEW:
    * As a work laptop: Comfortable keys and usable track pad. Reasonable battery life (reach up to 6 hours with 3-4 tabs on Google, listening to music, with MS Word and MS Excel on, 30% screen brightness). Recharges from 5% to 90%+ around an hour. Sturdy build for its thin chassis. White LED back-lit keyboard is visible enough in low light (but not as bright as mechanical keyboard LEDs). Speakers are Bang & Olufsen which are ok quality (i.e. not garbled, a bit tinny like any other speaker when volume is maxed out) and loud enough for when you need audio in a presentation (conference rooms that seat 6 to 8 at a table). No problem multi-tasking, fast and responsive. — I crunch numbers and do a lot of research work leading to multiple tabs/windows open at the same time.
*As a gaming laptop: The aforementioned specs let me play titles like Witcher 3 with a mix of medium settings near 35-50fps (Hair works off), Overwatch at low settings at over 75fps but not so smooth since screen is 60hz (I have played on a 144hz monitor so playing between the two, I do notice my tracking is sluggish on the laptop). The performances I got may have been affected by thermal throttling (See Note). The laptop gets very hot after only 10 minutes of gaming. The need for a cooling pad is critical, if you can game in an air-conditioned room do it. If you have desk fans, direct it to your laptop. No exaggeration but a Hersheys kisses (still wrapped) I placed near the number pad became gooey from the heat generated.

Overall: The price paid (about 1,200 USD) for a thin and relatively light gaming laptop with the i7, 16gb RAM, and 1050ti is worth it but major concern is getting the laptop to cool down when you game. It really needs help cooling down.

Good all around desktop replacement with some gaming chops (while still looking like fairly conservative!), January 19, 2018

This pretty much checked all the boxes that I was looking for in a 15″ laptop. I was after something with great specs and future proof, quad core i7 processor, with a dedicated graphics card that DID NOT look too gamer-like (red accents/fantasy icons/red backlighting). The specs on this machine are just about perfect and the i7-7700HQ chip and 1050ti graphics combo is super fast in all uses. The only improvements I would have liked are better speakers (there is little bass) and maybe a thunderbolt connection. Those aren’t deal breakers though for me. Many reviews have said it runs slightly hot during intense (or long) gaming situations, but has been fine in watching videos, multitasking with many browser tabs, photoshop, and light gaming. I think a simple ($20) laptop cooler would help with more intense gaming situations. Otherwise, this is a great all-around desktop replacement laptop with specs that are very price competitive in this setup.
